Fueling Longevity, Pt. I: The Philosophy of Intentional Nutrition

Over the years, I’ve experimented with every type of diet imaginable. And each time, I was certain I found the answer.  Which I did, for a season.

In my teens, the Atkins diet was all the rage and fueled my track and cross-country training. In my twenties, I was a vegetarian who ate veggie junk food and drank beer. In my late thirties, I was all in on the Body-for-LIFE method, precisely weighing chicken breast and egg whites. In my forties, vegan, then raw vegan was the way I rolled. In my fifties, mostly vegan, until a ProLon fast made something clear: my body was craving animal protein in a way it hadn't for years.

What I've learned across almost a half century of dietary reinvention isn't which diet is correct. It's that there is no permanent right answer. There's only the discipline of knowing the facts – and the wisdom to align them with where you actually are in your life's journey.


Retiring an Outdated Paradigm

Chances are you've spent decades being quietly conditioned to see food through a lens of quantification. Calories, portions or a number on a scale that represents an arbitrary ideal from thirty years ago.

It's time to retire that paradigm. Not because discipline doesn't matter. It does. But because the objective has changed.

As we step into our second and third chapters, nutrition is about protecting our independence, preventing chronic illness and maximizing the quality of every day we're given. Food isn't something to be managed. It's the raw material for the life you're building. And it requires a completely different relationship with your plate.


The Common Thread Beneath Every Diet

Vegan, paleo, Mediterranean, keto, plant-based. Scroll through health news on any given day and the sheer volume of dietary philosophies can feel overwhelming. Each comes with its own rules, its own promises, its own passionate defenders.

Here's the reassuring truth: when you strip away the labels and the trend-driven noise, the underlying blueprint of true nourishment is remarkably consistent. And the best definition I’ve found is in the CrossFit philosophy:

"Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch, and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat."

Look closely, and you'll notice it's written in a deliberate order – quantity and priority, right there on your plate:

  1. Protein & Green Vegetables (The Base). Quality protein—meat, fish, eggs or plant proteins—builds and preserves the muscle mass you'll need for the next thirty years. Non-starchy vegetables provide volume, fiber and micronutrients without spiking blood sugar.

  2. Nuts & Seeds (Natural Fats). Essential fatty acids for joint health, hormone balance and sustained satiety.

  3. Some Fruit (Low-Sugar Carbohydrates). Modest portions, offering antioxidants and energy without the crash that follows.

  4. Little Starch & No Sugar (Metabolic Protection). Keeping refined starches and added sugar to a minimum protects your metabolic engine from chronic inflammation and fat storage.

Whether your plate centers on wild-caught fish, pastured eggs or colorful plant proteins, the hierarchy is the same: quality, simplicity, metabolic function. It cuts through dietary dogma by prioritizing real, unrefined whole foods that protect your lean muscle, stabilize your energy and minimize inflammation, without extreme elimination or artificial substitutes.

When in doubt, Michael Pollan said it in seven words: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.”


What the Standard Plate Costs You

To understand why this hierarchy matters, it helps to look honestly at what happens when we live by its inverse.

The typical modern diet flips the CrossFit prescription upside down. Instead of protein, non-starchy vegetables and healthy fats leading the way, the average plate is anchored by heavily processed carbohydrates, industrial seed oils and hidden sugar.

When refined starches and sugar dominate your daily rhythm, a predictable, domino-like effect unfolds in the body:

  • The energy rollercoaster. Rapidly digesting carbohydrates spike blood glucose, then crash it. You feel fatigued, foggy and reach for the next quick fix within hours.

  • Accelerated muscle loss. Without quality protein at every meal, your body lacks the building blocks to preserve lean muscle and bone density, a loss that accelerates in midlife unless you're intentional about counterbalancing it.

  • Visceral fat storage. Excess refined carbohydrates that overflow your energy needs don't just sit under the skin. They pack around your vital organs, driving metabolic dysfunction.

  • Systemic inflammation. Ultra-processed foods and industrial seed oils irritate the gut lining and vascular system, creating low-grade, chronic inflammation that shows up as joint stiffness, brain fog, slower recovery and elevated disease risk.

This isn't just about feeling tired. It's a constant, unnatural strain on your metabolic engine. And it keeps your immune system on high alert when it should be at rest.


Meet Your Hormonal Gatekeepers

Here's where the science becomes genuinely empowering rather than intimidating: understanding two hormones that govern everything I just described.

  1. Insulin (the storage hormone) is released whenever you eat carbohydrates, especially refined starches and sugar. Think of insulin as a key that unlocks your cells to store excess energy. When insulin is elevated, your body is firmly in storage mode. Fat-burning stops.

  2. Glucagon (the mobilizer) is released when blood sugar and insulin drop. This is the hormone that signals your body to reach into its own reserves, including stored fat, and burn it for steady, lasting energy.

When a diet stays consistently high in ultra-processed foods and frequent carbohydrate snacking, insulin remains chronically elevated, causing a state called hyperinsulinism. Glucagon rarely gets called into action. Over time, this silent pattern pulls you away from optimal health: persistent low-grade inflammation, rising insulin resistance, stubborn visceral fat and reduced daily stamina.

But the reverse is just as true. When you prioritize protein, non-starchy vegetables and healthy fats, while keeping refined starches and sugar to a minimum, insulin stays low between meals. That's what gives glucagon room to do its job: mobilizing your own stored energy, including fat, for steady, lasting fuel.

This isn't about falling in line with a rigid diet. It's a targeted, practical strategy to quiet chronic insulin spikes, calm systemic inflammation, and give your body consistent access to its fuel.

Here's the central, liberating truth I want you to walk away with: when you shift from ultra-processed, high-sugar foods to whole, nutrient-dense ingredients, you're not just choosing a different diet pattern.

You're changing the chemical messages your cells receive every day. You quiet chronic insulin spikes. You let glucagon mobilize your stored energy. You dial down inflammation. You protect the lean muscle that keeps you strong, mobile and independent for decades to come.
